Map of Petra
Introduction
Experience the magic and mystery of Petra, one of the most awe-inspiring archaeological sites in the world. From the bustling Petra Visitor Center to the serene tranquility of the Monastery, this guide will take you on a journey through centuries of history and breathtaking landscapes. Let’s begin our journey!
At the Petra Visitor Center
Our journey starts at the Petra Visitor Center, where you can buy your tickets (if you don’t have Jordan pass Ticket) and pick up a site map. Here, you also have the opportunity to hire a local guide who can enrich your journey with historical insights and local anecdotes. Restrooms, a café, and a gift shop are also accessible for your convenience.
The Bab as-Siq (Gateway to the Siq)
From the visitor center, a gentle gravel path leads you to the Bab as-Siq, the entryway to the Siq. Along the path, you’ll see Djinn blocks, Nabatean tombs, and the Obelisk Tomb. Take some time to appreciate these structures and snap a few photos
The Siq
The Siq, a narrow gorge that snakes its way through towering sandstone cliffs, is your gateway to Petra. You’ll walk or ride a horse-drawn carriage for about 1.2 kilometers, marveling at the natural beauty and ancient Nabatean sculptures, such as the god blocks. The Siq’s climax comes as it gradually reveals Petra’s most iconic monument, the Treasury:
The Treasury (Al-Khazneh)
As you exit the Siq, the sight of the Treasury, carved into the cliff face, will leave you breathless. The elaborate façade, standing about 40 meters high, is a masterpiece of ancient craftsmanship. The name ‘Treasury’ comes from the local legend that pirates hid their treasure in the urn at the top of the monument.
How to Find the Best Viewpoint in Petra – Treasury from Above
For a truly mesmerizing perspective of the Treasury, make sure to visit the viewpoint overlooking it from above. Follow these steps to find the best viewpoint
- From the Treasury, continue walking past the Street of Facades and the Theater, following the path towards the High Place of Sacrifice.
- As you ascend, you’ll reach a fork in the path. Take the left trail that leads uphill toward the High Place of Sacrifice.
- The trail will wind its way up the mountain, and you’ll notice signposts guiding you toward the viewpoint. Follow these signposts to stay on the right track.
- After approximately 30 to 45 minutes of uphill hiking, you’ll reach a plateau with a breathtaking panoramic view of Petra. From here, you can see the Treasury from above, nestled amidst the majestic rock formations.
- Take your time to soak in the incredible view, capture stunning photos, and appreciate the vastness and beauty of Petra. The unique perspective will offer you a different angle of the Treasury and its surroundings.
- When you’re ready to head back, retrace your steps on the same trail and make your way back down to continue exploring other parts of Petra.
Street of Facades to the Theater
Proceeding beyond the Treasury, you’ll find yourself on the Street of Facades, lined with more tomb fronts. A short walk ahead lies the Roman-style Theatre, which could seat around 8,500 people. This impressive structure was carved into the hillside by the Nabateans.
The Royal Tombs
Continuing along the path, you’ll reach the Royal Tombs, a series of grand burial places including the Urn Tomb, the Silk Tomb, and the Corinthian Tomb. Take some time to explore them and enjoy the views over Petra.
The Colonnaded Street and the Great Temple
Further on, you’ll walk along the remains of Colonnaded Street, the city’s main shopping street two millennia ago. On either side of the street are the ruins of the once-grand city center, including the Great Temple, one of the largest Nabatean public buildings.
The Monastery (Ad-Deir)
From the city center, prepare for a challenging but rewarding climb up to the Monastery. The route entails a steep ascent of about 800 steps cut into the rock. The journey can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, but the view at the top is worth every step.
As you ascend, you’ll pass souvenir stalls and small cafes, perfect for taking a breather and refueling. Don’t forget to turn around occasionally and appreciate the stunning views of the Petra basin below.
Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by the Monastery, Petra’s largest monument. Despite its name, it was probably a temple or a place for royal gatherings rather than a monastery. Its facade, similar to the Treasury but far grander, stands about 50 meters high and 45 meters wide. Take some time to explore the Monastery and the nearby viewpoints that offer vistas over the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Conclusion
The journey back to the visitor center retraces the same route, offering a different perspective on the sights you’ve seen. Remember to stay hydrated, wear a hat and sunscreen, and take your time to fully appreciate the magic of Petra.
